What makes us unique

Our data hackathon is accessible to all students of NUS, regardless of skillset or faculty. The word “journalism” makes understandable what we expect as a deliverable. It also emphasises the potential implications of real word data as data storytelling but it also goes further to encompass quantitative reasoning, since the story can affect societal arguments and social policy.

Questions?

Here are some of the FAQs and answers!

What is the theme?
The theme is data journalism. No constraints beyond that.
The event is open to all NUS students. If you can’t find a team, don’t worry! Sign up as an individual and we’ll find a team for you.
You can have a look at the guest speakers here.
It’s a competition with top 3 prizes to be won by participating teams. However, there will be supplementary workshops both before and during the event to help participants.
What is the scope and what are the deliverables?
Participants will be able to address any question they deem interesting. However they will be limited to data accessible for Singapore (opendata.gov.sg, SingStat, ITA datamall...). They will deliver a New York Time like data visualisation and a Channel News Asia like video accompanying it of maximum 3 minutes.

Mentors will assist participants when they need it. Indeed, participants should have fun using data to answer important questions but they shouldn’t be limited by technicalities. Scientific rigour, correctness and precision but also clarity and originality will be taken into consideration to decide a winner.
